Cosmic-ray Sources and Source Composition

چکیده
Present data on cosmic-ray elemental and isotopic relative abundances are shown to be unable to distinguish between various models of cosmic-ray sources and their composition. For example, the model of freshly nucleosynthesized material from supernova explosions as the cosmic-ray source is unable to account for some measured, key cosmic-ray elemental abundances. This and two other models are evaluated here in light of recent isotopic and elemental measurements. It is shown that model-dependent preferential injection, acceleration, and reacceleration do not allow a clear distinction of one model against the others. Future measurements of critical elements and isotopes are suggested, which should a†ord us the ability to do that. We base our suggestions on measurements and a quantitative comparison between the predictions of the standard leaky-box model for the Galactic propagation of cosmic rays and one in which reacceleration is taken into account. Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
متن کاملSignatures of the extragalactic cosmic-ray source composition from spectrum and shower depth measurements
We discuss the differences induced by the assumed composition of extragalactic sources on the predicted UHECR spectrum and the energy evolution of the cosmic-ray shower 〈Xmax〉. We show that different assumptions for the source power evolution do not modify our earlier finding that in the case of a mixed composition the ankle can be interpreted as the end of the transition from galactic to extra...
متن کاملImplications of the cosmic ray spectrum for the mass composition at the highest energies
The significant attenuation of the cosmic-ray flux above ∼ 5 1019 eV suggests that the observed high-energy spectrum is shaped by the so-called GZK effect. This interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with the ambient radiation fields also affects their composition. We review the effect of photo-dissociation interactions on different nuclear species and analyze the phenomenology o...
متن کاملUltra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Nuclei from Individual Magnetized Sources
We investigate the dependence of composition, spectrum and angular distributions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays above 10 eV from individual sources on their magnetization. We find that, especially for sources within a few megaparsecs from the observer, observable spectra and composition are severely modified if the source is surrounded by fields of ∼ 10 G on scales of a few megaparsecs. Low e...
متن کاملIsotopic composition of cosmic-ray sources
We use the GALPROP code and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) data to derive the cosmic ray (CR) isotopic composition at the sources. The composition is derived for two propagation models, diffusive reacceleration and plain diffusion. We show that the compositions derived assuming these two propagation models are different. We also compare the isotopic composition at the sources with the ...
